Objective: In the evaluation of burn patients, LA50 values are important for the determination of treatment efficacy and the demonstration of possible improvement over time. The aim of the present study was to determine the LA50 values and related parameters between January 1, 1979 and January 1, 2013.

Material and Methods: The medical records of 2051 patients admitted to the Burn Unit of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery between 01.01.1979 and 31.12.2012 were evaluated. To evaluate changes in LA50 values, burn size and related parameters were recorded. LA50 values, over the decades, were calculated using graphic and probit-log methods.

Results: The mean LA50 value was 51.27% during the 33 years in all patient groups. In the 0–14- year age group, LA50 values were 24%, 40%, and 70% in 1979–1990, 1991–2000, and 2002–2013, respectively. In the 15–45-year age group, LA50 values were 17%, 38%, and 50% in the corresponding decades. In the 45–65-year age group, the corresponding values were 10%, 30%, and 30%, and in the >65-year age group, they were 16%, 30%, and 20%.

Conclusion: LA50 values are important to evaluate treatment efficacy and compare results among different units. In the last four decades, there was a significant improvement in the LA50 values in pediatric patients. The same improvement was not observed in elderly patients.
